 Ideas and Resources

This page is designed to be shared!  Please feel free to place any ideas, success stories, or resources to help facilitate libraries becoming known as "Information Centers" an essential stop on the the Information Highway.

I think the best first place to start is by reading the OCLC's report on Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources. You can read it section by section for free or order it online from OCLC for $19.95

Another excellent article is  Re-Defining the Library by Lynne Brindley, the Director of the British Library in London. It was the keynote speech at the Bielefeld Conference in 2006. References the OCLC report and articulates the challenges faced by libraries. (I've provided a link, however, you need to go through a subscription database to review it.)

A very interesting blog that contains info about the past, present and future of library's can be found at http://librarytenses.blogspot.com.

Kelly - Great site! The informal tone was a perfect choice for making a persuasive voice that really spoke to the reader. You make a lot of key points about how advocacy is not working or helping libraries. I agree that positive marketing is incredibly important to the future of libraries. We need to reach out to the general public and make them more aware of the fact that we are not a community of shushers who spurn anything but moldy classics. Thanks for your entertaining and informative paper!

Hi Kelly,

Having a degree in business, I completley understand the need for marketing - no business can survive without effective marketing, and after all, isn't that what a library is? The library is in the "business" of information. And as you very effectively pointed out, since libraries are a fiscal drain on community funds, we need to prove our importance and show that funding the library is money well spent. Thanks!

Sharon
